Hamburg Planespotting Guide

As Germany's second-largest city and home to one of Europe's busiest ports, Hamburg offers a unique and diverse planespotting experience. At its heart is Germany's fifth-busiest airport, Hamburg Airport (HAM), handling a steady flow of domestic and international commercial traffic. Just across the city, you'll find the dedicated Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport (XFW), which serves the major Airbus manufacturing plant, providing rare opportunities to see newly-built aircraft. Get ready to explore the best vantage points for this dynamic aviation hub!

Hamburg Airport (HAM)

Hamburg Airport (HAM) is a major international hub focused primarily on short- and medium-haul European flights. The ramp is busy with the Airbus A320-Family and Boeing 737s, but the real excitement comes from the heavy metal. Look out for the Emirates Boeing 777 (multiple times daily), the Turkish Airlines A330, and the Qatar Airways 787 Dreamliner. With charter airline Air Hamburg based here, you'll also see a constant stream of executive and business jets.

Hamburg Finkenwerder (XFW)

Located across the Elbe River, Hamburg Finkenwerder (XFW) is a unique industrial airport. It serves as the final assembly line for most Airbus A320 Family aircraft, meaning test flights happen almost daily. The biggest attraction, however, is the regular sight of the massive Beluga and BelugaXL transporters (modified A330s), which deliver aircraft components from across Europe. This is a rare chance to see brand-new jets before they enter service!
